Why do I need a Coal Board Medical ?

It is a requirement that all Queensland mine workers obtain what is called a Coal Board Medical.
These can only be carried out by Nominated Medical Advisors (NMAs).

The purpose of the medical is to ensure that potential employees are fit for working in the mining industry. Undergoing a Coal Board Medical will provide you with a Section 4 that is evidence to employers that you are fit to work. The Section 4 will also list any restrictions to the type of work you can undertake. You might wish to consider getting a Coal Board Medical if:
  • You want to improve your application by being able to include a Section 4
  • You have received an offer of employment in the mining industry (check whether you or your employer will be paying for the medical.)
  • You have a condition or disability that might need clarification as to your fitness to apply for a position
  • Renewal of a previous medical – medicals are generally valid for five years although may need renewal more frequently over 50 years of age and for those in specific roles.
  • If you wish to apply for work in Queensland even if you have had a medical in other states. The Coal Board Medical is state specific.
On completion of the medical the applicant will be advised as to their fitness and capacity for the job for which they are applying. They will be given any recommendations deemed necessary to improve their health and whether they need to be reviewed again following any further investigations. If you have any further questions about the Coal Board Medical please do not hesitate to contact the Practice.
